EXPERIENCE:
(1970-2004 employed as and elementary and middle school teacher in
the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District)
- Taught 5-6th grade
students (all subjects except art and music) at Central
School, Belmont, CA 1970-1974
- Taught 7-8th
grades in Reading Lab, English, Social Science at Ralston (then) Junior High School, Belmont, CA, and
coached tennis and basketball, 1974-1980.
- Was two-time President of the teacher's union, working successfully with teachers, the
administration, and the Board of Education - 1977 and 1982.
- Designed and supervised Ralston school's
first computer lab -1990.
- Taught district teachers computer skills via the Mentor Program, 1990-92.
- Taught 6-7-8th grade
Math, Photography, Physical Ed., Journalism, Study Skills,
beginning and advanced Computer Literacy at Ralston Middle School - 1980-2004.
- Pre-published a math workbook: Ratio and
Proportion, 1992-4, and authored an
online booklet
of 15-20 personal stories as demos for
students
- Published an award-winning 8 page,
tabloid-sized student newspaper (for 15 years) which was widely distributed in and outside of the
school.
- Since retirement in June of 2004, have
tutored students in writing and math
skills
- Volunteered in the AVID program at Menlo
Atherton High School
- In June 2007 I took the School's Attuned
course based on Dr. Mel Levine's books and studies of the neurological
(brain) components of how people learn.
- 2009-2016 have worked, as still do, with as a volunteer tutor (two days a week,
4-5:00) with Sr. Maryjane of the Catholic Worker House in Redwood
City, helping 5-9 graders
- with their daily math homework.
- Have tutored individual students professonally over the past decade (see below).
- 2012 Put myself through an DVD online course in Algebra II which helped me become more literate in Algebra.
- 2013 August-October 15 prepared and tutored a student in
preparation for the math portion of the GED. Used and am familiar with
the book provided by the state for the
- California High School
Proficiency Examination (CHSPE). Student and parent were very pleased
with the program, and the student passed with flying colors.
SKILLS IN WORKING WITH STUDENTS AND ADULTS:
- Ability to motivate students to learn by fun and interesting
methods
- Innovative, persistent, conscientious, hardworking, and
fun-loving and has a sense of humor bridging the adult/child gap.
- Able to help students find and work with their strengths and weakness(es) to become independent learners.
- Integrate learning of all sorts and value creating
thematic lessons (e.g., the Gettysburg Address which brings in many
subjects: vocabulary, history, civics, etc.)
- Try to know the whole student, his/her interests, to relax and to establish rapport.
