BENITO SANTIAGO

PERSONAL REMARKS: I met him in person at SBC Park in 2001. I was in the front row. Before the game I waved to him and gave him a thumbs up. He saw me, smiled, and waved. Near the fifth inning I got a foul ball he hit. And at the end of the game he gave me his bat. How cool is that! (See my picture with the bat and ball.)

FAMILY: Benito grew up in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

STATS--- Last year Benito Santiago season was cut short because he broke his wrist. Last year with the Royals Benito played in 49 games, he had 175 at bats, he had 48 hits--10 double's, 0 triples, 6 home runs, 23 RBI's, and a .274 average. That is pretty good for just playing in 49 games!

In his career Santiago has played in 1,972 games, with 6928 at bats, with 1824 hits, 322 doubles, 40 triples, 217 home runs, 920 RBI's, and a career average of .263. Benito started the year out  with the Pirates but got released in May this year. He is now a free agent meaning any team can sigh him.

In his rookie season with the Padres Benito was N. L. Rookie of the year. He has played on 9 different teams. He set a career high in home runs in 1996 when he hit 30 with the Phillies.

TEAM HISTORY--- Benito didn't go to college, but went directly to minors, then the pros. He started with the Padres, then went to the Marlins, the Phillies, the Reds, the Cubs, back to the Reds, the Giants, the Royals, and finally the Pittsburgh Pirates.
